As Julian Bond famously characterized most kids' understanding of the civil rights movement: Martin stood up, Rosa sat down, and the white folks came south and saved the day!
One of Take Stock's missions is to deepen the sketchy knowledge of the Civil Rights movement among today's young people. To this end, we have paid particular attention to image captions, and to the summaries that introduce our picture portfolios. Browsing our folios provides detailed views into the important events that are covered here. We encourage you to send your students to our site.
We are also pleased to make the photographs on our web site available to educators for classroom use free of charge. Simply do a screen grab and download any watermarked image that you might find useful. But please understand that this resource is restricted to classroom use only, and that any further reproduction or publication requires a license and the payment of a licensing fee. To do so without authorization is a violation of copyright, and deprives the photographers who risked themselves making these pictures of a source of livelihood.
The entire library of Civil Rights images can be found at TakestockPhotos.com. Once you've clicked to enter the sight, you'll have a choice between the Civil Rights collection and another library of images from the Farm Workers' movement, which you may also find useful.
We also ask that if you find this resource useful, and have the ability to create an Internet Link to our websites, that you do so with these URLs:
